The Cultural Center „Jules Pascin“ marked the third anniversary of its opening with the photo exhibition „Rebirth“ – an exposition that tells a story about the power of memory, time, and hope. The initiative is part of the cultural program of the „Blue Danube“ International Folklore Festival, organized by Vidin Municipality and taking place from September 4 to 6, 2026.
The event was opened by Yuliyana Dimitrova – Director of the „Danube“ Municipal Cultural Institute, who welcomed the attendees and noted: „The exhibition carries a message of how oblivion can also serve as a premise for a new life in an old form.“
The author of the exhibition, Malin Marinov, also addressed the audience and presented the idea behind „Rebirth“. The exposition is structured in two main parts that place side by side two different images of the very same building.
The first part takes us back to 2012 – a time when the Vidin Synagogue lay in semi-ruin. Although the scars of time were clearly visible, the photographs preserved its authentic atmosphere, its imposing architecture, and the spirit of a bygone era.
The second part, shot in 2026, presents us with the fully transformed look of the building – today Cultural Center „Jules Pascin“. Having preserved its historical memory and architectural value, the building received a new life and a new purpose – as a space for art, culture, gatherings, and shared stories.
Representatives of the Jewish community in Vidin attended the event, sharing personal stories related to the synagogue alongside their gratitude for the building's restoration and preservation.
Among them was Streya Mayer Puncheva, who shared childhood memories and spoke about her parents' wedding, which took place back when the synagogue still functioned as a house of worship. Her story walked through various chapters of history – from innocent childhood memories and the difficult years of nationalization to the present day, where the building is once again filled with life.
She shared with emotion: „We are truly pleased and proud of what has been achieved and how the space is currently being used, because it is being preserved remarkably well.“
Following the official part, guests had the opportunity to explore the exposition and connect with the history of the Vidin Synagogue – both as it once was and as it stands today.
„Rebirth“ is an exhibition about time, memory, and second chances – about the opportunity for a historical building to reclaim its life and continue serving as a hub for culture, gathering, and remembrance.
The exposition will be on display at Cultural Center „Jules Pascin“ until September 30, 2026.
