On September 10, the exhibition "Return to the Beginning" by artist Eliezer Alsheh was opened at the Cultural Center “Jules Pascin”. This is the author's first presentation in his hometown of Vidin.
The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Argentina with the support of the Municipality of Vidin, the Municipal Cultural Institute "Danube" and Mr. Asen Hristov, President of "Eurohold Bulgaria". It traces Alsheh's creative path during his Bulgarian, European and Argentine periods.
The exhibition was opened by Yuliana Dimitrova, director of the MCI "Danube", who stated: "It is a real pleasure and honor for me to open this incredible exhibition at the Cultural Center “Jules Pascin”.
Among the official guests of the event were Alejandro Sottner Meyer, Ambassador of the Republic of Argentina, Dr. Tsvetan Tsenkov, Mayor of Vidin Municipality, Daniel Cotini, Deputy Head of Mission, as well as Alex Magarinhos - grandson of the artist, accompanied by his wife.
Argentine Ambassador Alejandro Sottner Meyer expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the realization of the project, noting: "With this magnificent exhibition, Eliezer Alshech crowns his personal return to Vidin."
The Mayor of Vidin, Dr. Tsvetan Tsenkov, emphasized the importance of the initiative with the words: "I congratulate the organizers for this wonderful initiative. In this way, one of our fellow citizens, who emigrated to Argentina in the middle of the last century, is making a kind of "return" to his hometown through his creativity. "These paintings actually embody the connection with the roots, which no one should never lose. I hope that the Cultural Center “Jules Pascin” will be a home for many more artists from around the world."
The artist's grandson, Alex Magarinhos, also thanked for the warm welcome and professional organization, sharing: "My grandfather lived his happiest years in Vidin."
After the official part, the guests were invited to a glass of wine in an informal setting.
Eliezer Alshech (1908–1983) was born in Vidin to a Sephardic family. He studied painting in Munich, and in 1934 he had his first solo exhibition in Bulgaria and joined the group “The New Ones”. Since 1951 he has lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he has been actively engaged in creative work. In 1975 he was invited by the Union of Bulgarian Artists to hold an exhibition in Sofia with works created in Argentina.
